The Broken Record...
Tue Dec 11, 2007 12:36 pm
It appears we have a broken record at our house...Olivia has this amazing ability to repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat (you get my drift?), the same word over and over and over and over.
She wants to put her hat in the closet?
"Hat...Hat...Hat...Hat..."
She wants something to eat?
"Fooood....FOoooood....Fooood...."
She magically knows a phrase that she shouldn't repeat?
"Oh Crap...Oh Crap...Oh Crap..."
I said to Jen the other day, "how long can she repeat the same word?"
(Foooood....Fooood....Foood...) I stopped timing after about 2 minutes.
It's like a mystery...how many licks to the middle of a tootsie pop, comes to mind?

Olivia is what they call a "labeller" in speech development terms. These children acquire language very rapidly, pick up new words easily & learn them through repetition. My niece Robyn is a labeller, too. I remember her visiting with my sister around 2 years of age. The whole time she was naming things & repeating, repeating, repeating!

It's so funny, Olivia also labels object that 'belong' to others...eg. at the dinner table she was saying, 'bun, bun, bun...' pointed to Jen's bun and said, "mommy bun"...pointed to my bun and said, "daddy bun"...the funny thing is she won't label her bun 'Olivia bun'. If asked she will just say 'no' or every once in a while she will refer to herself as 'baby'...she will not say her name!

Tractor tractor tractor tractor tractor tractor truck truck truck truck truck
I know what you're talking about, Matt. All the way home from the city (about 20 minutes?) all I hear is "truck car truck car truck car truck car" - and he's not labelling what is driving by, he's just repeating these two words over and over.
Sometimes he'll throw in a "wowee" to spice it up a bit. I live for a little more spice...
