Making an Olympic Medal

Borrowed from: http://www.first-school.ws/activities/firststeps/olympics.htm

Tell the children they are now going to make an Olympic medal to wear for the games.

Choose the colour or black and white version.  The medal has an optional ribbon holder pattern to glue to the medal, fold over ribbon and glue to the back of medal.  The second method is to make a hole with hole punch and children can insert a ribbon about 18 to 24 inches long and help staple or tape the ends. You may be able to purchase inexpensive ribbon that has red, blue, white stripes such as depicted in the medal image or use any ribbon you have at your disposal.

Happy Family Day

Valentine’s Day was February 14th

Received this craft from a Kids Kingston member. Thanks for sending it to me.

For Valentine’s Day, stamp you child’s red-painted hand onto construction paper, card stock, or fabric. Add one of these Valentine Handprint Poems to make a keepsake gift for mom, dad, grandma, or grandpa. The heart-shaped handprint can be used with any handprint poem for any special holiday or occasion gift.

To make heart-shaped handprint:

Paint both hands red. Slant and stamp each hand. Overlap the fingers as they are stamped, forming the heart shape.

Valentine Handprint Poem #1:

This isn’t just any handprint as you can plainly see.
For it is a special handprint
Made by Me!
Along with this handprint
I send lots of hugs and kisses your way.
And ask that God bless you
On this Valentines Day!

Valentine Handprint Poem #2:

This isn’t just a valentine
As you can plainly see
It is of course my handprint
Which is a part of me
It’s bigger than the last one
Will be smaller than the rest
Isn’t it fun to see the difference
And how much I am blessed
It’s been through lots of frolic
And will be grown up pretty fast
They will be gone soon
Because I’m growing fast
But for the moment, it’s the best
Because it came from me
And just think
You help me grow up best
But I just want to tell you
That I love you (fill in name) dear
It’s been through lots of frolic
And will be grown up too fast
Just keep this to remind you
That I love you one and all
A simple little reminder
Of yesterdays past

Valentine Handprint Poem #3:

This isn’t just a valentine
As you can plainly see
It is of course my handprint
Which is a part of me
It’s bigger than the last one
Smaller than the next will be
Given to you with lots of love
From sweet and precious me
(Or sent to you) (Or lovable me)

Groundhog Day was February 2nd

I'm A Little Groundhog (sung to I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little groundhog, furry and brown,
See me pop while I look around,
If I see my shadow, down I'll go
Six more weeks of winter, oh no!

Family Literacy Day is January 27th, 2010

Family Literacy Activities

Literacy is more than books. There are several ways to keep your literacy skills sharp - all it takes is practicing for 15 minutes every day. Reading, writing, playing a game, following a recipe, or even singing a song all help prepare children for challenges ahead and sharpen skills for adults. Here are some activity ideas to practice your literacy skills:

The Count: Have your child count out the change required to make a purchase. Reinforce the importance of math in everyday life.

Daffy Dictionary:
Choose a word from the dictionary and write it on a piece of paper with one correct definition, then make up two more definitions that are incorrect but 'sound' like they might be accurate. See who can guess the correct definition. Teams can play this game, with members coming up with the daffy definitions together and also guessing the other team's correct definition.

Family Game Night
: Set up a family board game night where a different game is played each week. Have each member of the family involved in reading instructions and game cards and keeping score.

Hi Ho the Merry-o: Engage in sing-along sessions with your children.

Karaoke Night:
Rent a Karaoke machine and invite the neighbours over for a party. Not only is this activity fun, but it also encourages, reading, singing and family involvement.

Map out your trip:
Have your kids create the map for your next road trip so that they can navigate by reading signs and billboards. Create a trip journal.

Sharpen your mind:
Do crossword puzzles, word jumbles and word searches on your lunch break.

Sous Chef:
Following recipes is a great way to improve both reading and math skills. Ask your children to read the instructions out loud and help measure the ingredients when making a treat for the family.

Surf the Internet together to find great websites that support your hobbies and interests.

Write your own adventure: Write a short story as a family with alternative endings written by each family member.

“You’ve Got Mail”:
With adult supervision, have children go online and find a suitable electronic postcard to customize and send to a loved one.

Snow Squirt Painting

All you need is a few water bottles with a squirt top, some water and food colouring. Fill each bottle with water and some food colouring. Go outside and use your imagination. If you don't already have squirt bottles in the house, the dollar stores sell them.

Snowman Cotton Ball Craft

taken from: http://dltk-holidays.com/xmas/mcottonsnowman.htm

What you'll need:

  • cotton balls (about 40 per snowman)
  • blue construction paper (1 sheet per child)
  • black construction paper
  • orange construction paper
  • glue
  • scissors
  • optional:  popsicle stick

How to make it:

  1. optional:   I prefer to just premake the craft for them to use as a model and let them make their cotton ball snowman freehand but you can draw or trace two circles onto the blue construction paper as a guide for the children to glue cotton balls inside.

  2. Have the children glue cotton balls in two or three stacked circles to make a snowman shape
    • I like to squeeze some glue onto a paper plate or margarine container lid and let the children scoop bits of glue with a popsicle stick.
    • I find it gets too messy letting them squeeze the glue right out of the bottle onto the paper

  3. Cut out construction paper shapes (adults can do this prior to craft time for young children)
    • BLACK:  5 large circles per snowman (2 eyes and 3 buttons)
    • BLACK:  5 small circles per snowman (for the mouth)
    • BLACK:  hat shape (rectangle with a square on top)
    • ORANGE:  Cut out one triangle per snowman (nose)
    • ORANGE (or brown):  Long rectangle shapes (arms)

  4. Have the children glue their snowman faces, buttons, hat and arms to their cotton ball snowman.

Remembrance Day was November 11th

In Flander's Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flander's fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, tho poppies grow
In Flander's fields.

Liet. -Col. John McCrae

Poppy

Poppy we are but children small,
We are too little to do it all.

Children you may do your part.
Love each other is how you start.
Play without fighting.
Share your games and toys.
Be kind and thoughtful,
To all girls and boys.

Papier-Mâché Jack-O'-Lantern Craft

taken from: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/halloween/papermachejack/

This scary papier-mâché Halloween jack-o'-lantern is a lot of fun to make, but messy.

You can either put the jack-o'-lantern on a table or hang it from the ceiling from fishing line to make a scary Halloween decoration.

Do NOT put a candle in this jack-o'-lantern -- papier-mâché is very flammable.

What you'll need:

  • A round balloon
  • Newspaper
  • Flour and water
  • A pan and a stirrer
  • Scissors
  • Either orange tempera paint or orange tissue paper
  • Paint brush
  • A black marker

How to make it:

  1. Papier-Mâché Glue: Make a simple, thin glue from flour and water. Mix 1/2 cup of flour into 1/2 cup of water until the mixture is thin and runny. Stir into 2 cups of boiling water (the heating gives the glue a nice consistency, but is not necessary). Simmer for about 3 minutes, then cool.
  2. Tear a lot of newpaper into strips. Strips should be about 1 inch wide; the length doesn't really matter.
  3. Blow up and tie a long balloon for each person. Place the long balloon in a container (like a bowl) so that it is stable.
  4. Work on scraps of newspaper. Dip a strip of paper in the flour glue, wipe off the excess, and wrap the strip around the balloon. Cover the entire top of the balloon. Have at least three layers surrounding the balloon. Let it dry (at least overnight) after each layer.
  5. Let the papier-mâché balloon dry completely (it may take a few days). Pop the balloon and separates it from the outer papier-mâché skin. Throw the torn balloon away.
  6. To make the jack-o'-lantern sit flat on a surface, place a slightly damp cloth or sponge on the part that will be the bottom until it softens slightly (this takes a few hours). When it is a little soft, push the bottom in, making an indentation. This will allow your jack-o'-lantern to sit flat on a table.
  7. If you like, cut a hole in the top of the jack-o'lantern (this lets you put candy in it). Either paint the jack-o'-lantern orange or apply another layer of papier-mâché, using orange tissue paper scraps. Let it dry.
  8. Eyes, Nose and Mouth: Either draw eyes, nose and mouth using black paint or a black marker, or cut them out with a craft knife.

Your jack-o'-lantern will make a great Halloween decoration.

Juice Box Dolls

taken from: http://crafts.kaboose.com/juice-box-dolls.html

What you'll need:

  • Empty rectangular juice box container
  • Construction paper in your favorite colors
  • Yarn
  • 2 large wiggle eyes (for each doll)
  • Felt scraps (for pigtail ties)
  • Black marker
  • Glue stick
  • Clear tape
  • White craft glue
  • Scissors:

How to make it:

  1. Starting at the straw opening, carefully cut open the top of the juice box, but do not cut off the top.
  2. Wash out the juice box and let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  3. Cover the juice box container with construction paper using a glue stick. (See image.) Try wrapping the box as if you were wrapping a birthday present! (See image.) Tape both ends of the box if the glue stick will not hold.
  4. Cut strips from construction paper for arms and legs, about 10” long for legs and 6” long for arms.
  5. Fold strips accordion style then use glue stick to attach the arms to the sides of the container and legs to the bottom of the container.
  6. Cut squares from black construction paper to make shoes and glue to the end of the legs.
  7. Use white craft glue to attach the wiggle eyes to the front of the container.
  8. For the girl dolls, cut yarn into 6” lengths. Put white glue all over the top of the container and center the strands across it.
  9. Use small strips of scrap felt to gently tie (felt rips easily, be careful) sides of hair into pigtails. Trim ends of yarn so that they are even.
  10. Cut ½” lengths of yarn for girl’s bangs and glue in place.
  11. For the boy doll, cut yarn into short pieces about ¾” long. Put glue on the top of the container and add pieces to the glue, covering the container top.
  12. Draw smiles on with black marker.

Tips:

  • Instead of felt, you can use scraps of ribbon to tie the pigtails.
  • Decorate dolls however you like. Attach buttons, bow ties, and flowers--let your imagination run wild!
  • Place these adorable dolls on a shelf so that their legs hang over the edge.

Water Bucket Blast

A fun way to cool down.

For this game, you need two or more children.
Each child or team will need a bucket of water, an empty bucket and a paper cup.
The first child fills the cup with water from the full bucket and runs with it to the empty bucket to pour their water into it.
Both children (or teams) continue until they empty the original bucket of water and fill the second bucket.
The child or team with the most water in the bucket wins.
For even more fun, cut a quarter-sized hole in each cup and get the kids to plug it using their fingers or by placing it on their heads while they run to fill the bucket.

"A Father Just Like You"

"I just want you to know
you mean the world to me,
Only a heart as dear as yours
would give so unselfishly.

The many things you've done,
all the times that you were there,
helps me know deep inside
how much you really care.

Even though I might not say,
I appreciate all you do,
Richly blessed is how we feel
having a father just like you."

- green finger paint and red finger paint  (or pink, white or yellow)

 - Press the arm down 3 or 4 times onto a sheet of white paper (construction paper works great!) to make the stems of the tulips.
- Now dip the hand (excluding the thumb) into red finger paint and stamp on top of the stems (holding the thumb up) to make the tulip flowers.

Happy Earth Day!

Help for our "Feathered Friends"

Lend a helping hand to the birds in your area by supplying them with simple nesting materials. All you need to do is fill a mesh bag (like the kind onions are packaged in) with dried grass, short lengths of yarn and string, even stuffing from old furniture or feather pillow, or hair from your brush. Hang the bag in a location that the birds can safely access, watch them collect, you may be lucky enough to see their nest in one of your trees!

Spring Inside Planting

Potatoes
For potatoes, find an old one that has sprouted. Cut the sprout, plus a few inches of potato surrounding it and poke a few toothpicks into it to support it over a glass of water. Place the cut side down (the water should be touching the potato) and put it in a sunny window. Keep the water level high and soon you'll see potato vines.

Carrots
Cut off some carrot tops and put each one in a dish with some pebbles. Add just enough water to cover the bottom of the carrot. Hide the dishes in a place where there is not too much sun. In just a few days, the carrot tops will begin sprouting and turn into plants.

Happy Easter!

Egg Carton Tulips

What you need:
- Egg carton
- Green pipe cleaners
- Paint and brushes
- Scissors

Directions:
- Cut one section of the egg carton to look like a tulip.
- Paint the egg carton tulips using different colours. Let dry.
- Push pipe cleaner up through the bottom part of the tulip (you could also glue pipe cleaner to the bottom if you wanted).
- Now you have a bouquet of tulips.

- Scissors
- Glue
- Construction paper

Directions:
- First cut out anything that is green from the magazines, construction paper or your scrap bin.
- Glue your green shapes all over a piece of construction paper.
